The benefits of a retirement home for the elderly

Choosing the right retirement home relies on having a good, clear understanding of what is offered, explains Ben James Smith, director of White & Sterling Retirement Living.

When chosen carefully, a retirement home or village can provide just the right balance of convenience, comfort, quality and security.

White & Sterling has just completed its new lifestyle retirement home for the over-55s.

Located on Thorpe Road, in Norwich, Heath House encompasses 17 beautifully designed, one-bedroom apartments, which are now available to rent.

Here outlined are three key benefits the retirement setting offers its residents:

1. On-site amenities

Heath House is aimed at those who might be downsizing and are still keen to pursue their own interests and take part in activities, while living in luxurious accommodation.

Whereas other providers of retirement homes and villages might just offer the accommodation, with a warden service, we go a step further by providing a number of on-site amenities as well.

We have a barber’s and a hair salon, for example, and our residents can enjoy beauty treatments at Heath House. There is also a gym, with high-tech rowing, cycling and running equipment, plus a craft room and sunroom.

Residents can also make the most of our beautiful landscaped gardens, where they can grow vegetables if they choose or simply sit out in the courtyard to soak up the sunshine. We also have a cinema room, where they can enjoy screenings of their favourite movies.

One of the other great benefits is that we have a family suite at Heath House for family members to stay in if they wish when they come to visit.

We also provide a concierge who can book taxis for them so they can go shopping, to the theatre or out to meet friends and family.

This is all extremely convenient for our residents and makes it easy for them to stay as active as they wish to be.

2. Security

The residents themselves and their loved ones will be eager to know that any retirement home is safe and secure for those who live there.

We also take this very seriously at Heath House and so ensure there is a manager on site 24 hours a day.

In addition, we provide CCTV, an audio visual system intercom system and a warden alarm.

All the apartments also have floor sensors to alert the on-site staff should a resident fall over. Our residents can therefore enjoy the benefit of city living, in a tranquil environment, with a high level of security to give them reassurance.

3. Flexible care services

It is important that those moving into retirement homes have the flexibility to access care and support should they need it.

At Heath House, we have several care services, such as residential care, dementia care, nursing care and respite & convalescence care.
