Are people with dementia eligible for a Blue Badge?

A Blue badge helps people park close to their destination using on-street parking. It can be used if you are the driver or the passenger of a car.

In 2019 the scheme changed to include a longer list of eligibility and no longer solely based on physical disabilities.

With this it now considers hidden disabilities and non-physical difficulties they may have with journeys.

The guidance does not reference dementia or specific conditions when it refers to what is considered a hidden disability or what is a physical condition.

This is because diagnosis of a certain disability does not entitle someone to a blue badge, it is how that disability impacts you on a journey and whether you meet that criteria. There is two exception to this and that is someone that is registered as blind or has a severe disability in both arms.

Dementia can cause mobility problems, things such as spatial awareness and balance for instance. For others it may be the distress of the journey itself.

You can apply for a blue badge online it may be for yourself or someone else.

There are also paper forms available in some councils the gov.co.uk site can direct you on the correct place to get them from.
